NRS 097-2-1 is South Africa's mandatory standard for grid-tied inverters. Installing a non-compliant inverter can void your home insurance, create safety hazards, and result in fines from your municipality.
NRS 097-2-1 (Network and Customer Requirements for Grid-Interconnected Embedded Generation) is the South African standard that governs how solar inverters connect to the Eskom distribution grid. It specifies requirements for anti-islanding protection, voltage and frequency ride-through, power quality, and disconnection procedures.
Anti-islanding is the most critical requirement: when the grid fails, the inverter must detect the outage and disconnect from the grid within 2 seconds to prevent backfeed that could electrocute Eskom technicians working on the lines.
Request the NRS 097-2-1 test certificate from your inverter supplier. The certificate should be issued by an accredited South African testing laboratory (SABS, CSIR, or an internationally recognised body with SANAS accreditation). The Solarens SI Series hybrid inverters carry NRS 097-2-1 certification — certificates are available on request.
In addition to NRS 097 compliance, most South African municipalities require a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) from a registered electrical contractor before approving a grid-tied solar installation. The CoC confirms that the installation meets the requirements of SANS 10142-1 (Wiring of Premises).
All Solarens SI Series hybrid inverters are NRS 097-2-1 certified. Contact us for the full test certificate and compliance documentation.
